[It isn't everyday you find someone straight from the past asleep on your doorstep--or the equivalent of it. Though this Sokka had been much younger than the one Lin and Tenzin were familiar with, it hadn't taken long at all to verify his identity. A quick call to Katara had been made, and she was likely going to arrive within a couple weeks.
The boyish, younger version of Chief Sokka, one of Republic City's more prominent, historical figures, had miraculously slept through it all. Only now is Korra hearing from the acolytes that he might be awake, and she spares a moment to wonder if she should wait a little longer and give him some space.
She stands in front of his door a few seconds before finally shrugging. A little peak into the room wouldn't hurt. She pushed the door open a little and stuck her head inside, scanning the room for her fellow Water Triber.]
[Since waking up in this little room, he'd... been more than a little confused. Everything seemed to be decorated in themes similar to the four Air Temples that he'd visited over the course of his journey with Aang... but this didn't look like any of them. And that was besides the point that he hadn't been to one of the Air Temples in a while! The last thing he'd remembered was finally making it back to the Fire Nation palace and sleeping in a big bed for a change; no more cold nights in the clouds sleeping on Appa.
[The Air Acolytes he was familiar with, but again, everyone was all but giving him the silent treatment, as if they weren't even sure how to address him or even what to say to him. Sokka of course had said plenty when someone finally had noticed him awake, but that acolyte had almost burst out of the room with shock.
[But that was then, and now, there's someone who is definitely not an Air Acolyte coming in to greet him. Sokka turns to the door and looks at her a little suspiciously before finally speaking.]
Look, I don't know what sort of prison this place is, but it couldn't hurt to provide a guy with a little bit of breakfast after I wake up?
[Korra, this is Sokka and his good friend Sarcasm.]
[More than a little surprised by that greeting, Korra hesitates a moment before completely stepping into the room. As she closes the door behind her, Sokka might notice the familiar colors of her clothing, and the fur and beads that are commonly worn in the Water Tribe.]
This isn't a prison. [Korra finally says, propping a hand on her hip. She gives him another curious look, then continues.]
I can grab you some food if you're hungry, but --the acolytes didn't tell you anything yet?
[Oh Sokka's already pretty sure this place isn't a prison. Or at least, if it is a prison, it's like that Dai Li re-education camp that they found in the Earth Kingdom, where it doesn't look like a prison but a freaky little building underground cultist camp. But no, Sokka had been asked—politely—to stay here, but still, the fact that no one had proffered a reason to do so was... a little off-putting.
[But when Sokka takes a better look at Korra, there is a lot that he recognises. She could have been one of the older girls from the Southern Water Tribe for all he knew... except she wasn't one of the older girls from the Southern Water Tribe. Though granted, he hadn't seen them in a while, but... at least it keeps him from being entirely too disagreeable.]
Nope, can't say they have. Something about how they wanted either Tenzin or the Avatar to be the first to explain things to me. And since you're not Aang, I'm guessing you must be Tenzin. Kind of a weird name for a Water Tribe girl, but...
[But there are more important matters to discuss. Seriously.]
You mentioned something about food though. Meat, perhaps?
[Oh, boy. In just a few short minutes, Sokka's already pointed out a few problems they might have in getting him adjusted. This Sokka is still from Aang's time, and Korra has no idea how to break the news to him just yet. So she pauses, deciding to focus on the lesser of the two evils for now.]
Uh, sorry. This is an Air Temple, and that means the people here are all air acolytes. The people of the Air Nation are vegetarians. [She explains it further, one hand finding its way to the back of her neck.] I can probably get you something with meat later, but that means I'll have to go out to the city first.
[She hesitates again.] And my name's Korra, not Tenzin.
Okay, Korra. [Not sure why she's being the one to explain things to him, but sure, fine, whatever.] I'm Sokka. And... you're Water Tribe, right?
[It didn't hurt to ask!
[But right... right. Of course it's an Air Temple. Of course it's going to be vegetarian. Those people just don't get the amazing power of bacon and pork and Arctic chicken.]
Of course it's an Air Temple. It had to be an Air Temple, where it's vegetables from sunup to sundown and back to sunup. [Sigh.] I mean, I guess vegetables... aregoingtobefinerightnow. I think I can make that one major sacrifice... just this once!
[And so he looks to Korra with a neutral perspective. There's no more scepticism and no more dubiousness. She's being helpful, and if she is Water Tribe, that makes him rather prone to trusting her. But still, there are still so many questions.]
So if you're not Tenzin, why are you the one to be telling me all this?
That's right. [Okay, she probably shouldn't be surprised he'd guessed. Water Tribe clothing is pretty distinctive and recognizable, even when it's from a different time period.
His disgruntled acceptance of the vegetarian meals makes her smile a little; Katara had often told her stories about Sokka when they took a break from the waterbending lessons. Her Sifu had often gotten this faraway look in her eyes when she described the family members she's already lost, but it had been a way to pass on the stories to the new Avatar as well as keep the memories alive for herself.]
Uh... [Korra's smile freezes, then slides right off her face.] That's... a good question. Before I tell you the answer to that, I'm gonna need to know how much of the war you actually remember.
[There's no doubt Sokka's going to find out most, if not all, of it eventually, but for now it's probably better to ease him in.]
[Well, this Korra girl certainly seems all nice and well. She smiles at his jokes. She's being awfully patient with him. And she's at least helping him get used to... whatever in the world this is. In some ways, she reminds him of Suki. In more ways than one, he's reminded of her. A Water Tribe Suki—what's not to like? But that's not something to consider for now.]
How much I remember of the war? Pretty much the whole thing. [Sokka leans back a bit, propping himself up on his hands as he looks at the wall slightly above Korra to recite it all off.] Katara and I find Aang trapped in an iceberg; after bringing Prince Jerkface to our village, we go off with him to learn the elements. Blah blah blah, Aang learns waterbending from Katara, earthbending from Toph, and firebending from Zuko. Katara and Zuko defeat Azula, Aang takes down Iroh, and Toph, Suki, and I take down the rest of the Fire Nation's army. Well outside of Iroh and the other old guys who liberate Ba Sing Se. Big party after that, and then Aang, Katara, and I go and start moving the Fire Nation citizens in the Earth Kingdom back to where they belong.
And then... poof! I'm somewhere where I shouldn't be.
[Sokka pauses for a moment... wondering why in the world Korra asked this question. Because who didn't know what happened in the war?]
[It’s just as they suspected, but that doesn’t make Korra feel any better. Where is she even supposed to start with this explanation? She takes in a deep breath. Whatever time period Sokka’s from right now, he deserves the truth. She’d hated it when Tenzin and her father had kept things from her; it wouldn’t be fair for her to do the same to Sokka now.]
You should probably stay seated for this. [She cautions him first.]
The thing is, you’ve somehow ended up in the future. This is Republic City—part of the Fire Nation colonies you, Katara, and Aang were trying to dissolve. Uh, things didn’t really go like you’d planned, if you couldn’t tell. Some of the people in the colonies were happy to go back to the Fire Nation, but the ones in the older colonies weren’t so happy about it. A lot of them had already started families here, and they didn’t want to go back. So … the United Republic was created.
[Korra’s suddenly really glad she’d at least paid attention to these particular lessons. She pauses now, waffling over the detail that would probably make him freak out.]
As for me—you know the Water Tribe is next in the Avatar Cycle, right?
[He practically punctuates each syllable of that before just trying to pinch his forehead between his middle finger and thumb. This sounded absurd, which meant one of three possibilities.]
Okay, either this is one entirely big dream, Toph has went to vastly extraordinary efforts to try to pull a fast one over me, or...
[Or... this is the truth.
[But he's willing to hear it all out before he makes any decision on it.]
Yeah, yeah, air, water, earth, fire, and that. So... let me guess, you're telling me you're the next Avatar.
[Sokka just groans. It is a lot, but hey, if there was a world that he could have randomly popped up into, Sokka has dreamed up a lot worse worlds in his past.]
Well, even if this is a dream, I might as well have a full dream stomach while I'm dealing with it. Would... it be okay if... I went with you to go get food? I might as well just jump headlong into the frozen water to get the shock all over with.
...
Besides, if it really has been several dozens of years since when I came from, I should probably stop off in the bathroom too.
I don't think that's how time travel works, Sokka. But...sure, you can come with me if you want. Being cooped up in a room by yourself is no fun any way.
[Suddenly, Korra perks up as an idea hits her.]
How do you feel about Water Tribe food? There's a great place in the city--I go there with my friends sometimes.
Wait, wait. You know who I am, and yet you're asking me how I feel about Water Tribe food?
[Sokka just gives Korra a rather incredulous look.]
It's the best type! Sea prunes, five-flavour soup, all the meat you can pile on a plate. Who wouldn't like it? [Pause.] Okay, well, except for Aang, but he really doesn't know what he was missing.
But yeah, I'm all for getting out of here! Let's go!
What're you waiting for, let's go! We can take the ferry to the main city.
[She figures she should just leave a note with Tenzin, but where's the fun in that? Besides, Korra's sure her mentor would be able to figure out she's keeping an eye on Sokka anyway.]
[What is Sokka waiting for? He scrambles out the door and is already on his way out the door and briefly passes Korra in the direction of where she's facing. He almost starts running off without her, but he halts a little bit down the way before turning back to Korra.]
Last one to the entrance to the temple is a rotten ostrich horse egg! [he proudly declares before turning and dashing off. Of course, he's going to lose this one. Not only is Sokka's keen direction senses going to turn the wrong direction at some point, but Korra could probably do some fancy airbending to pass him even if he didn't.]
[Sokka is already pretty amazed at things from the ferry. From Air Temple Island, one of the first things he saw was the absolutely massively large statue of Aang on Avatar Aang Memorial Island. Sokka may have actually called it a "gigaangtic statue" at some point. But even then, he can see tons of buildings off in the distance dotting the city's skyline. Which, in some regards, he supposes is pretty underwhelming since he's been to Ba Sing Se.
[... At least at first. But when they get up into the thick of it, to see the bustling metropolis zooming with motorised vehicles, the sheer number of people of all walks of life living together, and the sheer height of the buildings, Sokka changes his mind about everything.]
You mean... all this happened in just sixty years!? [he says whilst pointing dumbfoundedly at the ciy.] And I thought the Fire Nation had it all going on years ago. This is just nuts!
Well no kidding! This is like... crazy stuff compared to what I'm used to! I mean, if we'd had this stuff...
[The results of that go unmentioned. After all, his mind is kind of exploding with possibilities. After all, there's still something of a scientist deep down in there. Now he wants to go figure out how it all works. He and Asami would get along so well.]
Lead the way, Ms. Avatar, [he says as he gestures for her to go first. Of course, he isn't expecting getting tugged there, but his feet catch up with him, and he will certainly hurry along after her until the cultural centre is in view... or at least a certain thing just out in front of it.]
Whoa whoa whoa... is that what—or should I say—who I think it is???
[If Korra is excited to see Sokka's reaction to this, well... then she won't be disappointed. Because Sokka will practically be floored by it.
[He can't help but be excited by it. He can't help but soak it in and feel just a little bit proud that he's managed to do something worthwhile... enough worthwhile to be cast in bronze or whatever it is and made a giant statue out of.]
I must have done some amazing things later on in life. Kind of makes working on the whole Harmony Restoration Movement seem like it paid off... even if it didn't actually turn out the way we had wanted originally.
[He says this almost in awe, as if they're walking on hallowed ground or whatever.]
But this isn't for Republic City. This is for the Southern Water Tribe? So what, do I get to be some amazing chief that leads our amazing Water Tribe warriors into battle or something!?
[Korra just watches him with a fond smile, wishing Katara were here to see this younger Sokka's reaction to the statue. Perhaps she should send a message later?]
You have some pretty high expectations, huh. [She draws herself out of her musings to laugh a little.] I mean, you do become chief later, but you and the others already did so much for the world.
You guys ended the war and got the United Republic started. If that isn't amazing already, I don't know what is.
Wait, you mean I get to be chief too! Ha! Oh I can just imagine the look that my sister must have had when that happened. She'd probably just be shaking her head and vowing to move as far away as she could.
[Sokka almost seems awfully proud of that.
[But Sokka pauses midway through his gloating as the sudden thought enters his head. His face takes on a much sombre tone.]
So wait... if I'm supposed to be dead, does that mean Katara is... dead... too?
[Korra smiles and puts a hand on Sokka's shoulder, channeling what reassurance through it that she can.]
Actually, I think she was really proud of you. And she's just fine. She was my water bending teacher, you know? Tenzin's already planning to send a message to her later today. It just might take a while for her to get here, since she's still living in the South Pole. [Korra's smile widens.] I'm sure she'll want to see you, though. I mean, you're her brother.
[She perks up now.] Actually, speaking of family...
[Well admittedly, Sokka was probably kidding just a little bit. At least about the first part. The two of them could argue like no other.]
Oh, I always know that Katara really valued me. Even if she was too stubborn to say it. [He says that with a slightly huffy tone, even though he's totally kidding around. He does love his sister a lot; they just don't always come out and say it until push comes to shove.] But I am glad that she's still around. Though I have to say it is going to be a little weird seeing her all old and grey and me... well... not.
I hope this doesn't make her my older sister now. I'll never hear the end of it.
[He chuckles a bit at that but lets it go when Korra starts to topicbend on him.]
So what of family? Is there like a secret half-brother of mine that I never knew about?
[Yeah, Sokka hasn't even come to the realisation that there'll be descendants. His mind is still jumping to the elsewise strangest possibilities. Classic Sokka.]

Date: 2015-05-20 04:42 pm (UTC)You know Katara's old enough to be a grandmother, right?
[She makes it simple, even stressing the word 'grandmother' to see if he'll get what she means.
Part of her also wants to just let him figure it out on his own--though the kids spilling the beans is probably more likely than that.]
